Moths of the Great Lakes Tote

Moths of the Great Lakes! Truly, who doesn’t love our furry friends? This is a small selection of common moths in our wonderful little lake ecosystem:

Hummingbird Clearwings (Hemaris Thysbe): While most moths are nocturnal, this fella loves sunshine and is active during the day! They beat their wings at high speeds to suspend themselves, just like hummingbirds!

Isabella Tiger Moth (Pyrrharctia Isabella): This beauty’s caterpillar is the beloved Woolly Bear, who’s brown band is used to predict the severity of winter (wide band = mild, narrow band = harsh).

Luna Moth (Actius Luna): These gorgeous and ethereal moths spin the tails of their wingtips in circles to disorient bats enough to escape! 

Spongy Moth (Lymantria Dispar): Most will know a different name for this particular moth before it was appropriately renamed to Spongy Moth in 2022! This is an invasive moth that haunts every screen door in the Great Lakes region; it’s kind of a menace, & lucky it’s cute!
