Dandelion RISO Print

Dandelion RISO Print
Thank you for adding Dandelion to your collection! This piece is part of T.L. Luke’s “Urban Foraging” series, which highlights native, edible plants that are common in cities like Madison, Wisconsin. This series not only reminds our community what resources they can access today, but it also encourages us to reimagine what we plant in public spaces and who we serve by having accessible ingredients for our neighbors and ourselves.
This piece was illustrated and printed by hand using a Risograph printer (aka RISO). It both looks and works similarly to a photocopier in that it duplicates scanned-in images, but it functions like traditional screen printing because it only prints one color at a time using stenciled screens of said scanned-in image. The ink itself is made using sustainable soy-based oils and is more transparent than standard ink, which allows for layering colors to create new ones. (For example, this piece uses only Federal Blue, Fluorescent Pink, Yellow, and Black inks to create the illusion of greens, purples, and oranges!) RISO prints are known for their vivid colors, gorgeous textures, and ‘perfect imperfections’ because, despite RISO being a digital machine, it does not guarantee perfection and requires a lot of experimentation, which makes each piece unique. T.L. Luke printed this using the 2-drum RISO MZ790U printers at Communication, a community-driven, local, arts nonprofit in Madison, Wisconsin.
