CLIENT: Wisconsin Historical Society, Madison, WI
DELIVERABLES: Full color digitally illustrated poster design
SCOPE: Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS) commissioned visual artists around Wisconsin to make COVID posters inspired by the informative propaganda posters from WWII and beyond. There were several different categories, and WHS assigned me "Vaccinate."
I chose to draw three figures in front of a poppy field. From left to right, we have a pregnant woman, a grizzled farmer, and an exhausted medical professional, all with "I got vaccinated" stickers (other than the medic). I knew liberals were getting vaccinated, so I wanted to make a poster design that was informative for conservatives (like my entire family) that represented them. I also included information from Johns Hopkins (which conservatives trusted more at the time).
Unfortunately, after we finished the design, WHS's conservative board requested to get rid of all the "Vaccinate" theme posters. They reached out to see if we could remove the word from the poster, but I defended the work I had done to make this as conservative-friendly as possible. We decided to remove the health information and change "Vaccinate today!" to simply "Vaccinate."
