Welcoming Imbolc with a Brigid Cross

Imbolc (February 1-2) is a pagan holiday that originates in Ireland but is celebrated by witches around the world. Imbolc symbolizes the halfway point between the winter solstice (Yule) and the spring equinox (Ostara). The word "imbolc" means "in the belly of the Mother," because the seeds of spring are beginning to stir in the belly of Mother Earth.

This holiday also celebrates Brigid, the Celtic sun/fire and fertility goddess. In fact, she was so beloved by the people that she was adopted into Christianity as Saint Bridget.

Brigid's Cross is made as an Imbolc rite. It is believed that, during Imbolc, Brigid walks upon the Earth. By creating Her Sun/Fire Wheel (Brigid Cross), we invite and welcome the Goddess, and Springtime, into our homes.

Made with Magick

Since studying the craft and welcoming witchcraft into my own life, I've been very purposeful and thoughtful about my intentions with magickal works (like Imbolc rites!) So, here is what everything means in this piece for you, as the recipient:

  • Brigid's Cross. This is a traditional fire wheel symbol - found at the hearths of homes throughout Ireland and beyond as a symbol of protection. While this illustration is no replacement for a handmade cross (you can make your own with reeds, straw, or even pipe cleaners!), you can still be thoughtful about placement of this print in your home.
    • Tip: Hang above the door or over your fireplace (if you have one) for protection against house fires and other disasters. If you're buying this as a gift for someone else, it will act as a blessing of protection for the recipient.
  • The Serpent. In Celtic mythology, Brigid was associated with an awakening hibernating serpent which emerged from its lair at Imbolc. Traditionally serpents were associated with creativity and inspiration. Paths of earth energy were called serpent paths and at Imbolc they are stirred from their slumber.
  • The Serpent Egg. Another nod to Imbolc's embrace of fertility and new life.
  • Coltsfoot. Coltsfoot is an herb associated with Brigid and is considered the herb of Venus. Magickally, it is used to engender love and to bring peace.
